I thought the tune from 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' was written by a certain Bach. But now I hear someone else claims it. Was I wrong ?

I think Bach had different lyrics.

They ain't arguing about the lyrics !
I have the original single and it says
WHITER SHADE OF PALE
(Reed/Booker)
PROCOL HARUM
But that news story said 'Brooker'
touchy! - it's called humour........

The melody, particularly the organ part, is inspired by and based on two works by Bach - namely Air On A G String and the cantata Sleepers Wake - but doesn't actually copy either of them directly.
