I have always understood it to be about an affair - the line "We both know that it's wrong, but it's much too strong to let it go now," pins it down. In my version of events, the singer is single, and Mrs Jones, by definition, is the married party, but the beauty of pop songs is that everyone creates their own scenario for what they are hearing.
