BC stands for Before Christ and it's common knowledge that AD stands for After Derek (did you go to school??). Derek was the guy who slaughtered Christ in the year 0 because he was concerned that there was nowhere for the calendar to go. Once they got past the year 1 BC, everyone was scared shitless as to what would happen when they ran out of numbers. Dereck saved the day and killed the son of God and thus gave us the beginning of our current time. That was nice of him, wasn't it. When was the last time you thanked Derek?
that's silly. After Derek? Purlease. Ano Domini is the patron saint of red nosed reindeer. During the 100 years war the british decided to go away from traditional horseback cavalry and required something a bit sleeker, a bit faster, and a bit more adaptable to snowy climes. They discovered from their scandinavian partners the benefits of riding reindeer bare back (called stagging, where the term stag night comes from - where it was traditional to ride a reindeer bare back on your wedding night). The pioneer of this trade was BELIEVED to be a guy called dominic, but he was a hermit, choosing to live a quiet and nomadic existence. many people would serve a pilgrimage by travelling to the finnish mountains hoping for a chance to meet dominic. often they would ask "you know dominic?" and this derived down to the present day phrase "anno domini" which roughly translated means where the hell is dominic?"
Rubbish the pair of you.
It of course stems from the pub game of dominos and the plaintive cry of the winner who traditionally would shout "I have no domini!" (domini being the plural of course of domino) the object of this table game being to rid yourself of the small counters in the approved manner before your opponents.
This has been contracted over the years to ano domini which is now the well known phrase we hear quite often.
Ano Domini was of course the lead singer of "The Order" who had a No. 1 single in the early 70s with "Chant No. 2". They never repeated the success. although the song is often found on compilation albums of novelty hits. They were a group of Franciscan monks who had taken a vow of silence, so the so called chant was more of an instrumental, but since it was archipelago (sp) it was a fairly uninteresting 3 minutes, and a real surprise hit!
