The band in question was The Who. Pete Townsend was disgusted with the perceived persecution of Jagger and Richard and the possibility of the two going to jail on drugs charges. Townsend gave Thr Stones his assurance that The Who would ensure that Jagger and Richard's music would remain before their public. It turned out that Townsend's offer was not needed, and Jagger joked that he wasn't that desparate! Privately though, Jagger was grateful for such a public show of support from such respected peers as The Who.
