How to select a classical CD?
1 Answers
I was going to buy Vivaldi's Four Seasons today, but there are so many recordings available I don't know which to purchase! What should I be looking for/avoiding?

If you simply like the music, and know little about individual orchestras, conductors or soloists, then any recording will suffice - I fall into that catagory myself, so any recording will do for me. If you feel you'd like a specific orchestra, conductor, or soloist, your local dealer should be able to advise - pick an independent retailer who specialises in classical work, rather than a chain store - you'll get informed advice. I do know that the Nigel Kennedy recording is pretty spirited, and is known for that, so if you like a nice attacking rendition, go for that one. There's nothing really to avoid - if the orchestra is good enough to be recorded, tha average listener will be more than happy with their output.
