FLV, Midi, Windows xp sounds only working on 2 of 4 speakers

As my title describes my sounds are only working on my 2 front speakers of my 4 speakers with those 3 file types (.flv, .midi, windows xp sounds such as critical beep). I have tried many different options to make them work on all 4 but to no avail. I ask you all now for any suggestions what so ever.

Note: My front speakers are actually headphones and rear are speakers.

Just so you get the idea of what I'v tried... Reinstalling flash player; installing codecs; setting up codecs; trying different sound channels (4, 5.1, 7.1 etc); installing different video players (to no success); trying a different browser; trying to fix registry codes (the wavemapper one); deleting temporary files including the files themselves (manually); trying my sound card software; setting up quicktime to see if that will run it instead and (finally) tested to see what does and does not work (as in different websites). There are more to this list but as i said i want all suggestions.

Additional - strangely (possibly some but not all) MP3 files on a webpage do not seem to play either on rear speakers (such as a dictionary word sound) however sound works on quicktime movie previews & trailers. The problem thickens... :(

so are you saying that MP3 (and some other file types) DO come out of 4 speakers?

how do you know if you're wearing headphones? ;-)

what mobo?
the drivers are modified by the mobo mfr so only theirs work
I assume you've realised that surround sound is synthesized - so the correct drivers are vital

by windows sounds I assume you mean WAV?
how do "real" CDs play?

4 speakers - where are the plugs for them

Most file types do work on my speakers (all but those 3 as far as i know). I do not always wear headphones :S and my speakers have a power button so i take headphones off and turn speakers on. My mobo is the Nvidia XFX. I have the mobo drivers installed (including sound drivers). Yes i know surround sound is synthesized. Real cds work perfectly fine on all 4. The plugs for them (i assume you mean jack-ins) are at the back of my pc green = headphones, black (i think, it's definitely right, checked this) = speakers and pink = microphone. Also plug socket for speakers is plugged in obviously.

patronising - don't you worry your little head about being patronising.
jacks accept plugs - it was more important to know where the plugs are located - to ask how many sockets are on the back is irrelevant if you stick your headphones in an auxiliary panel on the front.

also plug is a generic term which people I work with would accept - on this type of forum I think it's acceptable
if you realy want to be pedantic about terminology they are in fact jack-outs jack-ins are used to input signals (as in from a mic).
.... unless of course to mean the connectors on the back of the speakers - which are indeed jack-ins

the reason I ask is some cards come with software that auto detects which feeds are in use and switch mode to accommodate - as in most systems headphones override speakers - hence my questions
we also now know your speakers are powered which could possibly have affected things if they are auto sensing
which is why it was important to verify that others were working - and with other formats

the xfx comes in a number of flavours - and the type of sound train is one of the differences (sort of relevant don't you think?) given the depth of irrelevant detail you offered - you seem a bit tight with the stuff that matters.

generally the xfx boards use the same layout as the earlier 6 series boards which also suffer from a number of compatibility problems - window's software has trouble picking the output from the card - so for instance a fair percentage of sound software has trouble recording from the card output (real media rippers etc)

which is one of the reasons when the nvidia mobo is used for gaming the onboard sound is replaced by a "real" soundcard
generally the soundblaster xfi range is a good all-rounder used by lots of gamers who use the xfx mobos

right - after all that I think the problem is that the surround sound synth is misreading or incompatible with the codec info - or the file samplerate - I have seen a couple of instances when MP3s wouldn't play on any PC or other device - but played OK through IE's own player. Turned out that the software used to rip the track was using an unusual samplerate (135Kb/s) that just didn't register with any devices

in this case I think it's the "card" that's out of whack

have you installed different codecs for flv - "k-lite" or "mega" codecs or whatever - rather than re-installing the same ones???

midi is an odd one - 'cause the card processes the data direct .... and WAV - wav should work with anything.

What I'd do is try your system with another sound card fitted
(easy for me I know - I have spares - but I can't see an alternative now - you've done the software - that just leaves the hardware

Nice way to be very explanatory and I'll use this term not so lightly... 'getting me told'. I now understand why you asked the question with the 'plugs' however i did not think of it before, my bad because I do have a front port too. As you said in the last part about buying a new sound card I'll do that in time. Also the xfx mb I dunno what model atm and can't be bothered to find out ;x. I am a little tight with info you need? hah... sure ;). I have tried all codecs and firmware is latest. Thanks for the answer again.

something that would be interesting to try would be resampling a couple of the FLVs - and I suppose maybe even the wav

Most of the time i try to be complaisant. I'll just buy a sound card. Solution to everything.
