Temptations - I think?
Are you thinking of Silver Star, by Frankie Valli + The Four Seasons? x

In my dream I'm a western hero
Riding my Palomino
Silver Star, there you are, Silver Star

Got my gun and my white ten gallon
Bigger than life , I reckon
Silver Star, there you are, Silver Star

Silver Star, Silver Star
In my dream I make much dinero
Chasin' the Bandelleros
Silver Star, there you are, Silver Star

But he - he gave me a nine to five, honey
Ain't livin' but I'm alive
Sure cut me down to size
He gave me the second prize

I'm layin' it on the line, honey
I'll let it go by this time
Next time around, I'll swear
Gonna get me somewhere - somewhere

In my dream I'm a desert hero
Bigger than Valentino
Silver Star, there you are, Silver Star
Leading ladies in warm embraces
Ecstasy on their faces
Silver Star, there you are, Silver Star
Yep, Four Seasons, but I'm not sure whether Frankie Valli was in them at that point. Does anyone know?
Frankie Valli was always in the Four Seasons!!! xx
Yes , I think you are right Bathsheba- I thought he may have left temporarily as he didn't sing lead vocals on Silver Star

Wikipedia (not always reliable but i think it's correct here)says:"When it became the third single released from the album, "Silver Star" became the first Four Seasons A-side that did not feature the lead vocals of group founder Frankie Valli: the person taking the lead here was Gerry Polci"
It's a pity phantomdrums seems to have lost interest, after all the work we've put in! xxx
It appears that Valli may have not been in the best of health when Silver star was recorded - as he was suffering from otosclerosis which severly affected his hearing which a future operation would correct.

Wikipedia states:

" "Silver Star" had Polci doing all the lead vocals, with Valli absent from the recording aside from doing some harmony vocals."

He also only had minor involvement in another of their later hits "Oh what a night" where he sang lead in the chorus . Polci and Don Ciccone

And as this clip shows Valli is absent from this performance with Polci singing lead vocals

I missed a bit out:
Polci and Don Ciccone sang 1st and 2nd verses.
