Brandon Flowers, vocalist and keyboard player of the band has stated in an interview that the line �are we human, or are we dancer?� is a reference to a remark once made by the late Hunter S. Thompson, an ascerbic journalist famed for �telling it like it is�, often in offensive terms. Thompson commented that America is nowadays raising a �generation of dancers (puppets with no mind of their own)�.
