ipod players are made by Apple.
Are they any different from any other MP3 players that are made by various other companies and seem much cheaper?

80GB solid state? I think your numbers are off.
The iPod was the original successful portable mp3 player. Others had tried before, but failed. The iPod beats everything else for a few reasons. Mainly, it's easy to use (combined with iTunes so syncing is easy), and the system is well-designed (for example, the scroll wheel being far superior to anything else for browsing your music).
It also looks very nice, which helped it become popular with kids that wanted a fashionable item.

Zebuk, as fo3nix says - check your figures! If I could get such a device I would get it tomorrow. Have you got a link to the device - was it an old end-of-line model?
On Play.com they have this at rrp of 99:-
http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4- /3471519/Creative-Zen-8GB-MP3-Video-Player/Pro duct.html
even 32GB is 134.99
48GB is 199.99
I would expect 80GB to be a hard drive not solid state.
Solid state drives of 80GB are over 500 (otherwise, the new Netbooks would probably install one).
The only 80GB Zen I could find was on ebay and the spec was a bit dodgy (and was a hard drive anyway).
Put us out of our misery with a link?
