The electronic signal from the piano (electric only, it has to be amplified to work), guitar, or organ, is fed through a 'fuzz-box' unit which distorts the sound, giving a 'fuzzy' instead of the usual clear tone, hence the label. The effect is commonly used on guitars - Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and others have made their own distinctive sound using a fuzz-box. and Tony Banks used one on some early Genesis material.
