Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is the original - it is not a version.

He did write it, after all

Its the original VERSION then isnt it ethel?

Lets not get pedantic at only 6.30 in the evening dear : 0)
No, it is not a version, it is the original.

All the others are cover versions of the original. There can be only one original, but countless versions.
I think Jeff Buckleys version is the best, but credit has to be given to Leonard Cohen for writing such a fantastic bit of music in the first place.
Hallelujah was on Buckley's Grace album, released in 1994 and has been a favourite version of mine ever since.

I'm glad Shrek has brought this fantastic song in to the public domain and 'popularised' it.
Ethel youre on a loser as your last post has proved my pount.
Leonard cohen original VERSION, the others are all cover VERSIONS.

DID THAT HELP ?

Thanks for posting that made my point far easier to prove.

And as i said really no need to be so pedantic , after all its nearly christmas , calm your jets mrs : 0)
Jeff Buckley is yet another example of a brilliant artist who was sadly taken before his time.

There seems to be far too many that fit that category though!
I am perfectly calm thank you Legend, but an original anything can never be a version. Your understanding of the English language is sadly negligible, but never mind - no doubt your Gaelic is better than mine.

Buckley's death is a great loss to the music industry, as you say, Chuck. He was a brilliant songwriter too.
Im not really liking halleujah, it needs pimpin'
After a spot of goggling ive now discovered that the original version of leonard cohens halelujah had 15 verses but he only recorded 4 .
Later john cale in 1991 recorded the version that was used in the shrek movie and wasnt actually sung by rufus wainwright in the movie but by john cale.
John cales version was then covered by jeffbuckley.

So the version we are hearing today is less than a third of the original version which leonard cohen wrote.
In fact the original recorded version by cohen with 4 verses isnt the version he sang live , as apparently he alternated different verses from the original 15.

So hope thats cleared that up about the many versions of the song ?
