I have numerous dvds and want to convert them to DivX format so I can transfer them onto a portable hard drive and take that with me when I travel abroad instead of all the dvds. Can anyone suggest the best software to convert them easily?
There are so many to choose from, and as I`ve never used any, I couldn`t recommend one.
I`ve googled, but couldn`t find a free one.
I even downloaded a "free one" to try, but turned out to be just a trial.
I suggest you google DVD to AVI/DIVX and look at some reviews.
Just tried it again from your link Chuck, after you install it, it tells you " this is non activated version" If you use it it will convert, but leaves a watermark right through the middle of your film.
I`ve had this so many times with, supposedly, freeware.
You won't find a totally freeware DVD - DIVX converter / shrinker. All of the supposedly free applications either let you convert only a portion of the DVD or as mentioned before contain a watermark. Also, the shrinking and conversion is not an exact science. You will need a bit of techno savvy. Another inhibiting factor is the time that it takes to shrink / convert the DVD. It can take up to 5hrs to convert a DVD, and unless you run a well spec'd PC you may find that the thoughtput is too much for your PC to handle and it crashes 3hrs into a conversion. My suggestion would be to download DIVX versions of the films you already own and use these on your portable hard drive.
