No sound!

Hi. I have win 98 and this is driving me mad. Im no expert on the pc so really dont have a clue wot to do. The sound has gone and Ive checked the cables and things are ok there. If I open up yahoo messenger then the sound plays if i open up a chat session! So thats the only time I get any sound thru my speakers. Any help there would be great. By the way, Im a complete dummy on this pc so dont sound to technical lol.
prev parameter is incorrect, how do i correct this have windows 98

if i were you, i'd hire so IT geek or maybe you have a virus. i have no idea. or maybe you should update it to windows xp. it's a lot better.

Can't remember what is in control panel of win '98 :-s ... but try this....

Go to Control Panel ... then sounds .. and see what "theme" you have ticked for sounds. Do you have it set to "no sounds"? if so, you won't get any desktop sounds. but you would get other sounds like, messenger etc I believe.
