Why isn't there a single number to call local radio stations to report traffic conditions form a mobile (legally and safely of course) rather than trying to remember each stations number.. Wherever I dial 999 the call goes to the most local control room so the technology must exist

Radio stations want you to tell them specifically. Remember they compete against each other for listeners. Why would they want to help out their competitors?

Yes, I think that is the problem - radio stations are commercial companies in competition with each other, where as the police are public servants and do not have a lot of competition!

Thanks for those answers, but they still don't take account of the many BBC Local radio stations which aren't in comercial competition.

The traffic agency's such as AA and TrafficLink/Metro networks have to work to the stations preference. Remember the BBC locals compete with independent locals whom might use the same traffic provider.
