Okay, now apparently Hollywood stars appear to be jumpin gon the bandwagon: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_ and_east/8070698.stm

Film star Demi Moore is to fly in from the US to support Susan Boyle in the final of Britain's Got Talent.

Judge Simon Cowell offered the Hollywood actress and her husband Ashton Kutcher first class air tickets for the ITV programme on Saturday.

What I don't understand is what is meant by 'support her' - Demi Moore is not a singer to my knowledge, (and even if she was, would not be the first person I would think of as a backing singer) so do they mean emotional support as they feel that Demi Moore (with her lifestyle) is best placed to understand Susan Boyle?

I am completely lost.

It was Demi Moore that happened to catch the first audition susan did on BGT and Demi was so impressed she started bigging Susan up on US TV, which is what led to the Oprah letterman show exposure.
The whole show is a just a blatantly over hyped and predictable piece of television, that modern audiences have become accustomed to.

Much better to revert back to the days of Hughie Green but rename it the Simon Cowell talent show.

At least in those days, it did produce some memorable variety stars, rather than the endless bunch of faceless singers and dancers that Simon seems to prefer.
Yeah Like Hope and Kean, Pam Ayres, errrrr Lena Zavaroni and New World (fix) or were they on New Faces?

Thank you but the word is support

support (s-prt, -prt)
tr.v. supported, supporting, supports
1. To bear the weight of, especially from below.
2. To hold in position so as to keep from falling, sinking, or slipping.
3. To be capable of bearing; withstand: "His flaw'd heart . . . too weak the conflict to support" Shakespeare.
4. To keep from weakening or failing; strengthen: The letter supported him in his grief.
5. To provide for or maintain, by supplying with money or necessities.
6. To furnish corroborating evidence for: New facts supported her story.
7.
a. To aid the cause, policy, or interests of: supported her in her election campaign.
b. To argue in favor of; advocate: supported lower taxes.
8. To endure; tolerate: "At supper there was such a conflux of company that I could scarcely support the tumult" Samuel Johnson.
9. To act in a secondary or subordinate role to (a leading performer).

So presumably it is either (7) or (9) above.

I can not work out why and in what capacity.
I'm slightly ahead of you Vic, I figured that if you knew what a supporter is, you could then work out what is meant by 'support her' as the question said.
I doubt if Demi will be doing an act, or dancing in the background or anything, so she's probably just going to be clapping and cheering, stuff like that, with perhaps the odd 'woohoo' thrown in here and there.
A bit unfair,dot.haukes. Granted Hope & Keen sunk without trace, but Lena Zavaroni died young and Pam Ayres is still going strong.

Just can't see the point - and also if it is unfair for one of the judges trying to 'influence' the public by bringing in Hollywood stars in support.

Bet the bookies aren't happy.
I think they just want to laugh at this poor woman - or is Demi Moore's film career drying up?

Simon Cowell is a prize prat - he loves a bit of celebrity attention. If I was you Simon - I would get myself a decent hair cut, one that does'nt make you look like a loo brush and cover up that tanned, pumped up chest with a nice shirt and tie, instead of wasting money flying in "celebs" - who can well afford their own tickets.

How committed do you think it should be then Lucy? Seriously, what are you all on about? She likes Susan Boyle, and someone's offered her first class tickets and a hotel and front row seats to go and see Susan Boyle. So why the F shouldn't she go?
-- answer removed --
Maybe she wasn't that keen then. So what?
