I read somewhere that 'Stop' by Jamelia was a cover song - is this true? If so who was it originally by and when, and is this new version very different to the old?

It was by Sam Brown in the 80s I think Not sure whether it was recorded by anyone else before that.
...1989.
Oh, and I think Sam Browns version is much better!
Yer Nicola is right, it was Sam Brown and although Jamelia has done quite a good cover all be it very similar even down to the phasing. Sam Brown is much much better. Lot more gutsy and sung with more feeling.

this sums up todays music !

peeple not knowing that songs are covers

Sam Brown's version does have far more genuine emotion, rather than just technique. The instrumental break in the cover version is synths, but in the original, it's Hammond organ, which seems far more meaningful. I always prefer music made by musicians with instruments, rather than pop stars with machines - I do recomend that you track down the original, you'll be glad you did.

what kind of sorry excuse is that ? so you are saying that you have no knowledge of anything prior to your birth ?

Indeed Matt has a point if a little harshly put......If no one was to listen to music (or take not of any events) before they were born then we would be in a very sorry state......Sam Brown is the daughter of Joe Brown who was a very big act in the 50s and 60s with his skiffle type band (Joe Brown and the Bruvvers), Sam's mother (name escapes me just now) passed away a fwe years ago but was also a musician.....Sam has had a few albums and hit singles but has largely in the past few years worked with other musicians like Jools Holland and as a Backing singer for Pink Floyd and David Gilmour.

Yeah Sam Brown is so good! I have met her as she was backing singr to my uncle (Dave Gilmour).
