why did michael jackson cover his mouth while singing at his 30th anniversary concert?

Part of Michael Jackson's particular view of the word is a Howard Hughes-like fear of germs and infection. That combined with a basic shyness he has never lost, in spite of being one of the world's greatest entertainers, is probably the reason. That is speculation of course, because along with everything else in his life, Michael has no comment to make.
