What Is The Most Played Online Game?

Years ago, Counter Strike was definately the most played online game. During it's time I think it was said that at any time during the day, there would be almost a million people playing Counter Strike, maybe more.

Then Halo had it's day...

Was just wondering if anyone knew what the most played online game is these days? I can't find any stats online.

vibrasphere, I don't play much online anymore aside from poker (full tilt, party, pkr)

I was a hardcore Unreal Tournament & Wolfenstein player for so long but the latest generation of shooters has left me feeling unsatisfied...especially on the consoles!

Yes yes! I saw that the new Wolfenstein was coming real soon, hope it lives up to expectations!

The games that I really like/want to play, either don't have an online mode or the online mode sucks...

Dead Rising, no multiplayer.

UFC Undisputed 2009, REALLY REALLY BAD multiplayer!

I'll stick with a bit of poker and the occasional bash on GTA3 & Vice City and maybe some Half Life 2 until the new Wolfenstein comes along.

I'd say it was WoW, without a shadow of a doubt. 11 million of us can't be wrong.

But surely that's all registered players, not how many are online at any given time?

Final Fantasy XI has 2.35 million characters registered.It isn't as popular as WOW because it is a much harder game to progress your character through the levels,it also has a lot less PvP content than WOW.

No idea Chappers, but to give you some idea of its size, the European verision alone of WoW has about roughly 100 servers, and each server holds about 40K ish people. This is obviously discounting the US market, Asian market and everywhere else ;-)

Its been estimated that World of Warcraft earns Blizzard around $300 million a month, or $3.5-4 billion per year - and that was in 2007/8 when the subscription base was estimated at a "mere" 10 million! This figure excludes all the money they make from sales of the software, expansion packs etc.
I have no idea what their overheads and running costs are like, but this must be the most successful gaming enterprise ever.

I would have to say that its Call of duty 4,as there are always upwards of 100,000 players online at any given time.
