Jeff Lynne, who hid himself away to write enough material for a double album, wrote the track in Switzerland. After a two week period of writers block dampened by the inclement weather outside, Lynne was suddenly inspired to write "Mr. Blue Sky" following a break in the weather when the entire area was bathed in sunshine, quickly followed by the remainder of the Out of the Blue songs including "Concerto for a Rainy Day".

The song was voted as Anthem of the Midlands beating other songs such as "Come on Eileen" and "Stairway to Heaven"[citation needed] and is played before each Birmingham City Football Club home game to honour Jeff Lynne for his lifelong support and his friendship with the former Blues football player Trevor Francis.

thanx and a quick reply thanx again
Very insightful, AV.
But hang on, Robert Plant may well have been brought up in Halesowen, but there's no way Led Zeppelin could ever claim to be a Birmingham-based band?
You should write for Wikepedia, A-V.
Is that sarcasm factor30?

I suggest the next time another-view copies text from Wikipedia without credit to the site that tags like [citation needed] be removed first.
Afraid so, ABerrant. Yes , it immediately read like a Wikipedia entry and the '[citation needed]' phrase was a giveaway. Besides, if A-V had used his own words the answer would have claimed Karen Harrison was the inspiration for the song.
Seemed the easiest way to find out the answer.
