sky tv recording on dvd

I have a Sony recordable DVD which should be set up to record Sky on Line 3 (I have followed the set up instructions exactly) but it does not record sound - only pictures.
Can anyone give me any ideas where I might be going wrong, or how to rectify the situation short of starting from scratch with the set-up?
