the song was written by Clapton as an homage to his (then) wife Patti. During the time Patti was married to Clapton's best friend Geroge Harrison, Clapton's unrequited love found expression in his song 'Layla' - his friendship with Harrison survived Patti's divorce of Harrison and marriage to Clapton. While married to Harrison, Patti inspired him to write 'Something' about her - she must be quite some lady!
