I think the song is about John Byrne, born in Paisley in 1940. He tricked his way out of a rubbish job in a carpet factory by posing as a self-taught painter of faux-naif images and called himself "Patrick". He confessed to the lie but his painting career took off as "Patrick" and he did record covers for The Beatles, Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connelly xx
