So I don't quite know how your songs got onto the iPod if they're not ticked... you'd better wait for someone more expert than me to answer this one.
As snags says, you can delete a song from a particular playlist (right-click) and it will still remain on your iPod.

regarding playlists, it's just a means of grouping songs that you particularly want to hear together - anything from the 1930s or anything by artists with Gaga in their names or whatever. Create one by clicking on New Playlist, then just drag the name of the song from the main list to the name of the playlist on the left side. You can put a song in more than one playlist if you want.
snags, yes if you remove it from a playlist it still remains in your library and the library remains on the iPod - the song just comes out of that list, it can stay in other playlists, it'll be listed under Songs and alphabetically by Artist etc etc (except on mine, which refuses to recognise a great number of artists)
Thanks guys, what I mainly want to know is how can I take a song from my Ipod, without deleting it, and keep it on the computer - perhaps for adding later on, but to save me flicking through song after song to get to all my faves, ie my faves are only maybe 2 out of 15 on one album, and I only want that two on my Ipod, I also have a lot of singles, so this "picklist" would also need to apply to single tunes. I guess what I am trying to say is it'a mainly single artists / songs so the album thing isn't really that relevant to my question just now....
okay, well, why not create a playlist of your faves? Just put the songs you want to hear on the list, and listen to the list rather than the whole library; the others will still be on the iPod but you won't have to listen to them if you don't want to. You can create as many playlists as you want and put the songs in any order you want.
It's not that hard! I don't use sync as I have stuff on my iPod from all different sources. Here's what I do. Plug the iPod in to your computer and wait till it appears on the list on the left hand side. Then click on it to reveal the Library that's held on the iPod itself. Just select a song from the list and press delete or backspace or right click and select delete, and it'll ask if you're sure you want to remove the song. Just click yes.
No biggie, hope it works.
