My VW Polo 1.4 1997 keeps cutting out.

i experience a problem with cutting out everytime i put my clutch down. no matter what speed im at it will cut out!!! making my steering unable to drive at all!!.. i found away with this problem is to keep my ignition on for a min or so before actually starting my engine but now ive been driving it for a while n i guess what ever the problem was needs to be sorted now> once my car reaches a normal tamp i notice it cuts out the most them, at lights, busy Juntions anywhere i am with my clutch down and now im unable to drive it! i also find if i start it like u wld start a normal petrol car it will not start! .. also the revs drop crazleyy!! n if i can get out my car in time my engine sounds like a box of metals bits rattleing and then it gaines normal revs. its very very strange and i really need help. can anyone give me some advise as ive looked through all previous coments and can anyone who has had the same problem as i seem to see most polo have it can they please tell me there end solution pleasee :(:(:(

I think the solution would be to either trade it in or take it to the scrap yard!

First job is to get the throttle butterfly cleaned thoroughly with some carb cleaner.

When I had similar problems with an old Astra, it turned out to be a small 'stepper' motor which controlled the idling speed. Once replaced, the problem was cured.

^ that was an idle bypass valve (which does the same job)
Polo does not have same system.
