I remember a song at school about 38 years ago that followed this melody - I think it was a translation of the Russian folksong "Stenka Razin".
Not mainstream artists but made uk charts (i think) J J Barrie - No Charge and Red Sovine -Teddy Bear. Both would melt a heart of stone
