Naah, *warning* handbag merchants at dawn -- attack attack!
No-one mentioned Roxy Music yet.
Saw Roxy Music live in York............Mr Ferry in leopardskin before his 'Mr Cool' days.
Nazareth?? They were a rock band. The Osmonds - David Cassidy so were not they were Teeny Bop Neither were ELO though Roy Wood was. Rod was a Mod

Just because they were about during glam rock doesn't make them Glam Rock

And Geordie were fronted by Brian Johnson who is the anti glam rock.
lol ludwig......Eno's look would be considered quite boring now...
Geordie's in that link you posted Dave.
How about Be-bop Deluxe? I reckon they count.
Thats why I pointed out Brian Johnson - He was exactly the same with them as he is with AC/DC so the rest must have been pretty glam :-)

Bill Nelson was fond of a White jacket ala the Rubettes but I don't remember to much make up.
I'm sure there's a bit here..either that or he's had a very rough night.

Ooooh dont remember them like that - I remember them on the OGWT a bit like this:

I think you have to careful about citing bands that were 'glam' in the true sense of the word, and not bands who simply dressed up a lot, as most bands did at that time.

So, strictly speaking, Roxy are not a glam band - The Sweet are. Elo are not a glam band, The Glitter Band are. Bowie is a glam act, Mud are not.

Others disqualified because they do not fit the true 'glam' criteria are -

Rollers, Mud, ELO, The Rubettes, Nazareth, Showaddywaddy, Noosha Fox, but just about in there because of Dave Hill, are Slade.

Thu Wurzels? Come on now ...
Totaly agree andy. Could queen be considered Glam because of some of freddies outfits tho?
No, glamourous yes, but not 'glam'.

The true exponents of 'glam' were guys built like brick chiffon houses busting out of baco-foil on TOTP, who would smack you silly if you met them face to face and suggested they were anything less than rugby-macho.

Examples - Steve Priest from Sweet, any of the Glitter Band.
What about Adam and the ants, were they glam rock! or new romantic?
Adam and his ants were about 8 years too late for Glam.
Interesting Andy. I don't think your definition holds up too well with Dave Hill or David Bowie AKA Ziggy, or Brian Connoly, or Marc Bolan tho.
It's open to interpretation. We could have the same discussion about whether such and such was punk or new wave or post punk, or so and so was a true grunge act or merely on the cusp of the Seattle scene etc etc.
My own criteria would be - active between 71 - 74, outrageous clothes (not necessarily glittery) , an androgynous image, make-up, a pop/rock sound (no soul, not too heavy, not too serious).
I'd definately put Roxy firmly into that category along with Bowie.
As you say ludwig, 'glam' is a broad church, and by my (humourous) definition, the more svelte performers do not fit - if you'll pardon the pun.

However, Roxy were seen as part of the 'art rock' off-shoot, which was part of the diversification of glam.

I don't think the androgynous approach is a given - really only Bowie and Bolan count there - Gary Glitter and the Glitter band were most certainly glam in the truest sense, but could never be called 'androgynous'!
Now if you make Slade "glam" because of Dave Hill then Mud are deffo Glam because of Rob Davi(e)s

I always regard the high use of make up and glitter Glam
Interesting point Davethedog.

I personally would not call Slade Glam - nor Mud - one member does not a glam band make - similarly Roxy really only had Eno pioneering that boa and eye-shadow look.
