Bay City Rollers had a minorish hit with it in about '76/77 at the tail end of their career - the original was by a Scottish group called String Driven Thing in about '71 - not sure if it was a single - if it was, it certainly wasn't a chart hit.

thanks cruthinboy. String driven thing was the answer, it was a song i was humming all night the more i tried to think who it was the worse it got you saved me a lot of head scratching. Thanks once again.pistonbroke

String Driven Thing

The basics of the group were Graham Smith (violin), Pauline Adams (vocals), her husband Chris (guitar / vocals) and Colin Wilson (bass / vocals).

Drummer Billy Fairley was added to the group for their second album c1973.  Also, Clare Sealy (cello) was an addition to the group while Bill Hatje replaced Colin Wilson.

Both Adams' left the group along with Hatje in 1974, the group continued withnew members.
