Lennon combined the lyrics of three separate songs to form I Am the Walrus, most of which whilst high on LSD. He had discovered that a teacher at his former school was getting the pupils to analyse his lyrics, so he made them deliberately nonsensical just to see what daft analysis they'd come up with...

Cheers for that Mark - I had no idea. I remember the furore caused locally when people were playing it non-stop, singing along to most of the lyrics without realising what exactly they were.

The Beatles could have easily played it live. They simply chose to stop touring after Candlestick Park because no-one could actually hear the music over the sound of the screaming girls...
