What is this Instrument in an Orchestra...

I saw the LSO play a couple of weeks ago and in the percussion section at the back was a bizarre instrument - does anyone know what it's called...it was standing on the floor and looked like about 10 silver pipes mounted vertically. The guy hit them with a hammer type thing. I've never seen one before!
