What happened to Dire Straits?

Many bands/singers from the 1980s have continued to perform on stage or bring out new music on CD. Dire Straits seem to have disappeared completely. I seem to remember that Mark Knopfler and his brother fell out so they never worked again but did either of them ever stay in the music business and continue to produce music? Have they ever talked about working together again?
