can i retract my statement

hi i gave statement to police which was exagerated and not entirely true...the case was in magistrates court and charged with abh. where can i go to retract it and is it of any use? or can i make another statement? plzzz help

If you retract your statement the police (and the CPS) will want to know why. If they believe that you lied in the first place, you risk being charged with wasting police time (or, if they decided that you exaggerated the truth, with attempting to pervert the course of justice).

If they believe that you're trying to protect an offender, you also risk being charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice. The situation would be akin to that of the woman who was jailed after withdrawing rape allegations:

If your husband has pleaded guilty he is already convicted and has accepted the evidence the CPS has. All that remains is for him to be sentenced and your statement will not be needed for that exercise.

If you retract your statement your retraction is unlikely to be taken into account. You may also face the difficulties outlined above by Chris.

ok now but is there a way in which i can help him not to get a harsh sentence ...i have been on my own for 2 weeks now and its horrible this was the 1st time he did it and he is extremely good with kids with our finances...and i,m scared of being on my own..i dont know wuts gonna happen its his 1st offence pleaded guilty..is ready to do what ever social services says,,,any ideas guys i,m so stressed....

in your other thread you say he has to go to crown court for sentencing. Does that not mean he has already been convicted and therefore you will not be able to retract your statement?
you've managed for 2 weeks on your own, ok you feel it's a little scary but you've done it
Make yourself familiar with your finances now before you get into debt. Go to the DSS offices and sort out what you are entitled to

Be brave - don't try to justify what happened, even though you say he has good points - you need to be strong and get the hang of managing on your own for a while. You really don't want to change your statement, just because being on your own is scary - it's only because you're not used to it. Get what help you can, go and have a chat with the CAB if that will help.
