A disaster for Britain?
The disaster would have been if she had not been around when she was and did what she did.
It was very unfortunate that there were huge casualties as a result of her actions. Many people lost their jobs, many communities were devastated and some have still not recovered. I do not make light of any of that.
However, it had to be done. The UK could not have continued the way it was in the 1970s and despite the devastation I outlined above, the country ultimately enjoyed unprecedented growth and wealth as a direct result of her measures. Do you really think notwithstanding the current difficulties, that people would have been anywhere near as prosperous over the past twenty years or so had the country continued as it was?
I happen to think that she should not be afforded a State funeral, but not because of her policies. Anyone who thinks she was a disaster for the country was either not around in the 1970s or has not properly thought through what would have happened had the country continued the way it was.

I agree mark, while many old miners had mixed feelings about Churchill and his dealings with miners during the '20's but they all agreed that when the time came he really came through. To compare Maggie to somebody of his stature is a travesty and to give her a state funeral would be a waste of public money and an insult to the many ordinary people whose lives she ruined. I do know round here they'll be many a glass raised to toast her journey to hell.
She didn't actually ruin their lives, paddy. If you look at what went before you will realise that their lives had already been ruined principally by the action of irresponsible trade union officials with an agenda of their own.
Someone had to pick up the pieces. If it had not been her it would have been somebody else. The outcome would have been the same.
