I think I heard the conflict in Syria described as a sectarian civil war. If Sunni and Shiite were seperated and lived in countries where they made up the great majority of the population civil wars would be less likely.

But it boils down to compromise and that's where it all falls apart.

Not if they made up only the majority of the population. In fact, even if they made up the entire population they would begin to argue as soon as a few of them wanted something different to the rest. Compromise is not in the vocabulary of many of those resident in the Middle East and planting democracy among them is a lost cause.

The biggest cause of problems in the Middle East over the past century has been precisely because one religious group was given its own separate territory to live in (Israel), so I can't see a repetition of the same policy leading to harmony elsewhere!

Maybe, but I suspect it may simply change internal conflict into one between States. Folk need to learn to get along.
