Brexit - How Were The Votes Counted?

I assumed that there were two large pots for the whole nation, one for the Exit voters and another for the Remain. Now though, I've seen one source that the UK were split into 13 regions; nine for England and one each for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Gibraltar. Another source suggested that it was done city by city. For example, I was told that the first result in was Newcastle, who voted to 'Remain'. The next result was that of Sunderland who voted to leave. They may even have counted the votes by the usual 650-or-so constituents. Does anyone know for sure?

You are right in your assumption. Results were announced on a regional basis but all the votes were put into one or other of the two 'large pots' you mention.
Each district council (such as Mid Suffolk), London borough or metropolitan/unitary authority (such as Sheffield) returned its own result, with the total number of votes cast being thrown into one big pot.

I know that in NI they were counted by constituencies.
there were "voting areas" (largely along council lines) but every vote counted in itself
Scotland by 32 councils, down here the whole of Cornwall bar a separate count for the Scillies - where the polls closed at six as the 3000 drunks who live on rocks would be reasonably compos mentis. (just joking on the latter) but they did vote remain and early on.
Indeed, NI was an exception to the rest of the UK.
