Yes I don't see why not. The N Koreans, as you imply, were on the road to disarmament before until the US adopted a more hawkish approach. It's hard to see how a very aggressive approach would work if the object of the exercise is to halt their nuclear development. If that is tried and fails, well then revert to the stick.

I see nothing wrong with talking, force should only ever be a last resort. Trump is a totally different kettle of fish to other Western leaders, and Mr Un must know this so may well be able to talk.
