...least merits the accolade?
In N Ireland Bangor joins Newry and Lisburn, made cities to celebrate the Golden Jubilee, as unlikely cities.

Colchester on the other hand, is worthy indeed with its roman history and castle.
Personally i can't understand why Stanley is being awarded city status? Though William was stationed there for a few weeks as a search and rescue helicopter pilot, the only other Royal to have set foot on it's streets was the Duke of Edinburgh way back in 1957.

Shropshire doesn't have a city - I think Shrewsbury or Telford should be on the list.
Milton Keynes...a modern sprawl with little charm.

Gingejbee,
But doesn't it have concrete cows?
Davebro, they have to bid to become a city. Perhaps those in Shropshire are proud of their 'non-city' status;

^well, it used to have them (not sure about now) but little else. A huge housing estate with a gigantic shopping mall at the centre.
why do they bother to bid to become a city, it won't make a scrap of difference to the people who live there
Nothing but bragging rights as far as i can see.
Rooting for Colchester!!!!
It's different in USA - there are cities with only a few score of inhabitants.
wel well considering Wells is a city
from long long ago
the bar is pretty low
Oh god did you hear Fluffy on the Been making a mess of colchester?

Col bit for Claudius ( hoo-dius?) and chester for castra
but also castra is Latin ( hoo da guessed THAT?) and means camp - - it wasnt called that in Roman times

victorious city fluffy said - - - which implies Augusta - or victrix.... so much Latin and so little time ( M Aurelius)
That’s a bit mean about Wells PP. At least it has a cathedral. I always thought you had to have a cathedral to become a city!
Dunno what religion's got to do with it in this day and age - do they also need to have a mosque & a Hindu temple? Complete cobras at TTT might say!
and a synagogue (for inclusivity)
Gingerbee Milton Keynes is more than sprawl with little charm. It has lots of green areas with lakes and hundreds of trees, a system of cycle ways and walks. Whenever I have been, which I admit hasn't been for a while, I've found it to be clean and well looked after and virtually littter free and every spring thousands of daffodils ans crocus appear in the grass verges. There are lots of sports/leisure venues too. I can think of far worse places to live although it does seem to be 'fashionable' to knock it.
Dorchester was a contender but unsuccessful so Dorset remains as having no city nor a motorway. I'm happy with that.
Most of the people of Ipswich were behind bidding for city status (for the umpteenth time), as were all of its business and commerce groups. However plan was dropped when the local MP refused to give it his backing.

So Suffolk still has no cities, despite Essex (to the south of us) having three, Cambridgeshire (to the west) also having three and Norfolk (to the north) having one. We're feeling left out!
