In my simple mind I can't help considering that if the French were as assiduous in policing/stopping people who wished to emigrate to this country as they are on causing problems for those who wish to go on holiday in or via France then we would have no illegal immigrants.

Does anyone agree with me? Or am I misunderstanding?

chelle ... we told the french "border agencies" that it was going to be busy and projected traffic figures that appear to be very accurately estimated. After receiving the data the french promptly reduced the manning levels at the check booths. Why would that be do you think? Did they have a big job already booked getting illegal immigrants(some armed) into dinghies?
>>> the french promptly reduced the manning levels at the check booths

They're fully staffed today.
People seem surprised that the French did not choose to spend 5x more on their border control after we chose to leave the EU. No, they spend the same but process traffic 5x slower because we no longer have open borders with them. Brexit is to blame, not the French.
That is gradually changing too. Spain and Portugal have massively reduced their trade transport with us through french territory, and increased considerably their seaport to seaport trade via supercarrier. Norway never trusted the french route. I once posted this. It still stands.

""It would seem that every generation of Brit has to learn for itself not to surrender our means of power supply, labour, or transport infrastructure to the French or Germans in particular, and to no one else for peace of mind. Let them blockade Calais and the tunnel. It hurts them and the strangely silent Irish the most. Have you looked at the increase in container ship traffic in the last 12 months? Spain and Portugal now seem to prefer that route as does Holland. In the meantime we should be holding the feet to the fire of every politician still living that put us in this servile position. Start with Major, Blair, and Cameron. They would be executed for treason in times not long gone.""
Well if they are perfectly happy to deter UK holidays makers from visiting France, all I can say is "Good luck, I hope your hoteliers are happy".
Well, it’s the most visited country in the world, I’m sure they’ll manage.
yes - folks stop of for a couple of days in Paris before coming to England!
France is getting the blame instead of brexit. If that’s what makes you happy. :-)
The French being arsy - as usual.
I agree with Naomi, the French are just being spiteful, all this could have been easily sorted if they had the will
They’ve always been the same, Rosetta.
Blaming the French for passport and border checks that we implemented as a result of Brexit is hardly their fault.
In some situations you end up cutting your nose off to spite your face.
C’est la vie!
Baby !!!

We're not deterred ... that's part of the problem!
Let’s just say they’re incompetent then… but they’re not. They’re arsy with the British and particularly the English - and always have been.
Reading some of the posts here from people I thought British I marvel you have the right to call the French "arsey".

I do not recall any French politicians supporting Brexit.

The numbers of British people who go to France to buy up old homes for restoration from which to run new businesses and who seem to be welcomed with open arms!

If the families of the French Resistance could meet up with those calling their ancestors such names...

I expect you all boycott French cheese and wine.
Why would you expect me to boycott all French cheese and wine, choux? I’m not arsy. I like French cheese and wine. In fact I like France.
Well, naomi, that seems at odds with your comments at 15:41 and 15.53. Lord knows what you would say about a race you do not like!
It's perfectly possible to like France whilst thinking the French are hostile to the British.
AB berates Johnny Foreigner.

All is well with the world :-)
