That's all we kept on hearing for 2 plus years, we did, what for? they can't protect us., 6.7 million waiting for treatment.

what we did to protect them was avoid them for a couple of years so they could get on with dealing with Covid - hence the vast waiting lists that have built up. And accept phone appointments rather than have a doctor actually examine you.
The Covid death toll has been high, but the failures there are I think down to politicans rather than medics. The governent knew pandemics were inevitable and even ran exercises to figure out how to cope with them - but then didn't act on them.
Also, there were 105,000 job vacancies in July (including social care)

Well, mostly they chucked money at private companies and their mates. And of course they threw 37 billion quid at a pathetic test and trace system, based on people typing figures into Excel 97 spreadsheets, labelled it NHS test and Trace when it became obvious it was cr@p, when the NHS already had a working system, which just needed to be modified for Covid.

The Government clapped them on Thursday nights, ignored the rules and pished it up on Fridays and Saturdays, despite the PM even catching Covid.
Seems a lot of bureaucracy needs addressing too though.

But ignoring the politics the UK needs to have a serious discussion about what it wants from the NHS. The all encompassing cover everything is just not feasible.
IMHO it should be basics only. NO IVF, no cosmetic surgery, no sex changes and more on prevention rather than trying to make everything a medical solution.

Well, cosmetic surgery isn’t routinely available on the NHS anyway, except in certain circumstances.

As for prevention and staving off the obesity epidemic I totally agree, but mention cycling or some other beneficial activity and ABers lose their minds.

It also appears that the police force have become care assistants and ambulance drivers for any riff raff they catch day or night who suddenly on being caught declares that they are feeling unwell.
Their so called duty of care requires them to transport and sit in A&E for half their shift for a doctor to confirm in no time at all that there's nothing wrong with them.
Then transport them back to the station to be charged, put into a cell with a hot drink and something to eat. Shift over for 2 police officers, leaving A&E to try and sort who really needs attention now that they have followed the rule of the law for the riff raff. This country needs to get its act together pronto.

On the whole I agree with youngmafbog. I'm about to write to my MP (it won't do any good, but will add to the evidence) about the experience of a neighbour last week in York Hospital. She has health issues anyway and contacted her G.P. by phone on Wed. morning. He told her to get to A&E and ask to see specialist Mr.X; meanwhile G.P. would e-mail this specialist directly and say she was on her way and why he considered it urgent.
I have lots and lots of detail, but in the event she was kept sitting on an ordinary chair for 31 hours, having seen the specialist after 3 hrs. wait and been admitted. They had removed the beds from the ward and there were 4 chairs where each bed would have been. All were full, one occupied by an 84 yr. old lady who had been ambulanced in at 3 a.m..
Another neighbour was over 15 hrs. sitting in a chair at the weekend and was not offered anything to drink from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m..
Just not acceptable. I expect most of the extra money will go on increased electricity bills and diversity training.
It needs root & branch reform - but I can't think of any politician brave enough to do it.

make sure you write to the MP where the Hospital is
the English have rules for everything AND
if you write to an MP for foo-fooshire and the hospital is in Yuckshire, he will refuse to do anything ( rule based). The MP for Yuckshire has to be written to. Strict rule
