despite the appalling plight of flood victims is it justified to spend government ( which means our) money to alleviate their situation.

Yes it is justified, because if adequate drainage had been put in place and houses had not been built on flood plains the houses would never have been flooded.
As it is the Government funded infrastructure that failed in the first place, why not? If people havent insured themselves then I would probably agree that only essential items and equipment be replaced (carpets, beds, fridge etc), not luxuries such as televisions, stereos, DVDs and uninsured cars etc.
I live in Sheffield and if you saw the damage that has been caused from the flooding then you may change your mind.

People have died just down the road from me and it's not very nice as i know one of the families who lost their 13 year old son in the floods.

Also, the amount of old people that have lost their home and all their possesions is quite high and they are staying in the Sheffield City Hall. A lot of these old people are ill and their lives are at risk from all this.

A lot of these people have paid their own taxes in their life and so therefore why shouldn't they recieve the help in which they are entitled to.
yes it it's justified. We send millions upon millions to other countries to help alleviate their plights, and whilst I don't resent this, why shouldn't we help our own people when faced with a crisis?
I feel much happier knowing that my taxes are going to the flood victims. It's highly likely that the reason they didn't have insurance is because many insurers don't cover for flood damage in certain areas of the country. I think these people truly deserve this money. It's the b******* that fraudulantly claim benefit and have kids for the sole purpose of having houses provided for them by the government. And not to mention the suicide bombers that claim benefits!!!

cont'd that shouldn't get our help
Question Author
It was a question BTW. I think help must be given but sensibly.

good point mountain boo, I agree.
what do you mean sensibly doc?, these people deserve as much money as it takes in order to get their lives back
I'm curious doc- would your lack of sympathy be the same if your own home was flooded?
i think aid is one thing but this should be provided to relieve real suffering, insurance should be expected to cover the majority of claims and not the government.

I am extremely sympathetic, I just wonder if house developers, insurance companies and the like should do more. Do not misunderstand me I could cry for these people but others should shoulder some responsibility.
No I agree with you
I definately think people should get help and not be left homeless but there was someone on the tele last night moaning about not having insurance and her kids not having toys and the tv was damaged and when were the government going to replace all her stuff - I just help is given out sensibly.
they need all the help they can get.......we help enough foreigners who come to these shores its about time we looked after our own for a change.
the government are toobusy wasting all the money on beggars, cheats, junkies, and asylum seekers to worry about genuine british nationals who need their help after being flooded frm their own homes.
