I see the odious Tony Blair has been talking to John Bercow because hen ants so to get out of giving evidence atbout issuing "comfort letters" to IRA members. Not surprised he's running scared!

I don't like Blair, but I don't like the Mail either. A few observations:
- the letters were to confirm that there was an amnesty of past crimes, as worked out in the Good Friday Agreement (GFA). Though Blair might want to take credit for the GFA, there were many people involved, and the Amnesty was probably Senator George Mitchell idea.
- the ambesty, and the letter were legal
- though we do not like the idea of letting criminals off, the result has been relative peace in Northern Ireland saving hundreds of lives.
- as we know, the Blair money making machine is in full drive. The date of his Commons interview may not have been convenient.
- the phone call failed, and he will have to appear in person, so a bit of a none story.

Here are a few of the words and phrases this Mail report - published yesterday - is peppered with...
"desperate phone call...
seem to be...
an apparent attempt...
begged...
it is claimed...
understood to have asked...
said to have."
Note the five individual words - seem, apparent, claimed, understood and said. These are all standard Mail-type devices to conceal the fact that they have no real evidence for what they claim. Have I Got News For You used the same technique as a joke, by always saying that something was “allegedly” the case. Anyone who believes this is a "substantiated" news item must be easily conned. Mind you, that obviously applies to Mail-readers anyway!
The Guardian report - published eight months ago - is an utterly different kettle of fish, as anyone who actually read it would easily see. The two are not side-by-side accounts of the same current news-item.
