there is a big noise made in the news about the daily express owner donating one million pounds to UKIP which apparently, is a welcome windfall because their coffers are just about empty

so, if it had not been for this donation, which has come as a surprise to the party - how would they have been able to carry on with their campaign and, in the event they had some clout after the election, go about the business of government?

...........with no money in the purse?
Probably. Money is useful, but free publicity possible to generate. Besides someone was likely to respond to a plea for donations.
Government is not paid for out of party funds
I'd be surprised if their coffers were nearly empty though
they borrow like the other parties.
