Couple this with the West Lothian Question and the controversy that surrounds Gordon Brown's potential succession as PM because he represents a seat in a Scottish constituency.

With the 300th anniversary of the Union between England and Scotland next year, has the United Kingdom had its day or does it still have a future?

I would imagine that if the SNP does get a majority there will be a referendum in Scotland. If that result is pro-separation, I think it would be wrong for England (& Wales) to stand in the way.

The general trend at the moment (aside from the EU, which goes its own way) seems to be for countries to fragment into smaller units, often along racial or religous divisions.

Thanks for that. Seemed like quite a feisty debate going on there. I personally think that the union will slowly become less relevant over the coming years.

I'm Scottish but I for one dont want to get rid of the union.Especially in this climate today.We need solidarity against the eejit muslims more than ever before.patriotism is for new year and auld lang syne as far as I'm concerned!

we have had our own separate laws, accents, flag for many a year and yet when it comes to it, most of us think we are British and are classed as such by others.Most people are happy with that(albeit the little snide comment come World Cup Season).Dont even mention the SNP, they are just a party that exists to take votes off the major players.beleive it or not, the majority of scots people arent so intellectually-challenged that they would even bother with them.Any port in a storm sums it up when it comes to that crew:-( and they have no affinity with the majority of scots!
