He was the Conservative MP for Epping from October 1925 until 1945.

He wasn't elected in 1940, he was chosen by MPs to head a party coalition. He was elected, however, in 1951. Sorry for being picky, don't mean to annoy you.

ok delyboy3 - so what was his constituency in 1951 (shaneystar2 has stated that he was MP for Epping only until 1945)

He was still "in office" as Prime Minister from 10 May 1940 - 27 July 1945.

Sorry for being picky,Delboy,but Churchill was appointed by King George VI to lead the Coalition government. The King wanted Lord Halifax to lead the country during its darkest hour,but Halifax decided that he cannot lead the country in wartime from the House of Lords and in the words of number 10's Permanent Private Secretary:"to our dismay,His Majesty sent for Churchill."
I believe it was reckoned that Halifax would have dealt with Hitler by forging a peace deal,despite the fact the Nazi boot was practically all over the European mainland. Churchill,on the other hand,took over a country now by itself against the Nazi peril probably mistrusted Hitler (can't say I blame him) and took him on,thus his "we'll fight them on the beaches..." etc.
He is often been accused of being a warmongerer,but Churchill warned Britain against the rearmament programme of Nazi Germany during the thirties and the appeasement Britain showed. Chamberlain didn't help matters by giving Hitler a free hand in Czechesslovakia.
Although,Churchill famously said "It is better to jaw jaw,than war war," his immediate brief when he took over in 1940 was the imminent threat of invasion,so he had to reverse to war war and not jaw jaw.
Churchill was our greatest Prime Minister,but he was a man of his time and what he would make of this country now I don't know,but we certainly need a strong leader,something we haven't had for years and looking at the faces on frontline politics,I doubt we'll get a strong leader for a long time.
