Foreign Words

I know I'm being really daft, but how do I get accents on letters when typing a foreign word? I've got the character map up, selected the letter I want, but how do I get it into an AB reply?

To type any unusual character, I look it up in the list (which takes no longer than finding it in the character map) and then hold down the Alt key while typing the relevant number on the numeric keypad. (It doesn't work if you use the number keys at the top of the keyboard). Releasing the Alt key makes the character appear. (Note: The numeric lock must be on but PC s boot up with it turned on by default anyway).
After a while, I've started to remember the most commonly used Alt characters. e.g. I know that is Alt+171 and is Alt+130. So typing them takes hardly ant time at all. I find this method far easier than messing about with the character map.
