Hubby was listening to a duscussion on his interenet radio last night and they were saying that if Britain sends in ground forces to Libya then we will be responsible for taking some of their refugees to come & live here. Is this true ?
"Rebels in the city said thousands of people were fleeing the attack, heading east, and the UN refugee agency said it was preparing to receive 200,000 refugees from Libya."
As we've become inextricably involved (in the UN and this war), I'd say it's a given yes.
Once we assume upon ourselves the responsiblity for protecting the Libyan people (which we seem to be doing), we would find it hard to turn away refugees. We can't have it both ways. Either it's not our responsibility, and we leave well alone ... or it is.
If the Gadaffi regime is overthrown it will be his henchmen who will be seeking refuge. It's ironic that men who oppressed their own people will be rewarded with safe sanctuary.
