what a sickening sight!
Just watched Sky News and it was showing the demo in London, the camera panned in on this very pretty young girl who looked about 18, she was smashing the windows of a bank, she then turned spent of energy and was grinning from ear to ear at what she had done...can anyone explain to me WHY?

Sorry Bobbisox got diverted by the more prosaic matter of making my dinner - you have misunderstood my one worder.....my point is that we do not live in a Democracy
"the belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by the people themselves"
....those protesting peacefully or otherwise are not represented by the political process - those in power in all political parties come from an elite Oxbridge clique and do not effectively represent the views of the majority.

Where were these protesters when Blair and Brown were:-
Ruining the economy inherited in (a decent state) in 1997.
Introducing an open border policy by not taking up the option to restrict the number of immigrants from the EU.
Taking us into 2 wars thereby compromising the security of the country.
Signing away a large part of the UK rights to govern across to the EU.
Extending the Human Rights act which allow it to be exploited by criminals.
Losing the country several billion by selling off our gold reserves at a low price.
etc etc etc

Ixion.. exercising your democratic rights involves being a registered voter and then voting in a democratic election. It does not involve criminal damage. If you cannot find a candidate that you think worthy of your vote then do the other democratic thing and stand for election yourself. The rest of us can the vote or not vote for you as we exercise our democratic right.
I see say what you're saying jomifl - but one independent candidiate can't achieve much...A completely new political party would be required and that is beyond my capabilities - I'm admittedly just bumping my gums and am not about to usher in a new and fairer society!
There must however be scope for the exercise of democracy between elections - the previous poster rightly mentions the failure of Blair to acknowledge that the people were against the invasion of Iraq.
If parliamentarians do not reflect the electorate then (what remains of) democracy will be in terminal decline and less and less people will bother to vote - indeed that is in fact what is happening now!
