I am really Worried for my Granddson...

Hi everybody again. :- (

I am really worried about my grandson as he is still in hospital. As some of you will know from last weeks post, he was born last Wednesday and all seemed ok for my daughter to leave Thursday but, they found his sugar count to low and he had jaundice,

The sugar level got back to normal with medicine and they put him under lamps to cure the jaundice and after 2 days he was allowed home but had to go back the following day for test. his jaundice level had returned to high and they kept him in and his having blood test every hour, the next one at 7pm tonight.

I know jaundice can be common with new born babies, especially if they were born early, like he was was (3 weeks) but it is still worrying.

I know my daughter is concerned but she is trying to give the impression to me that all will be fine, as she knows I am a worrier.

Anybody had anything similar happening in their family, as I am really anxious?

I put this Q in the old post from last week today but didn't get any reply's.

My youngest daughter was 5 weeks early and she too was jaundiced, as you say very common. They seem to be keeping a close eye on things, try not to worry, easy to say but difficult to do I know.

I should add my little one is now 33 years old and no ill effects.

My friend's son (now 10 years) was in hospital for well over a week with jaundice. Once it settled there were no further problems and he is a very healthy little boy.

My own kids were all fine but my brother's little girl had severe jaundice hen she was born and they had her in hospital for ages monitoring her and treating her and she's now a very bouncy little thing approaching 10 years old:) Try not to worry, they always err on the side of caution with little ones.

My doctor sees a lot of children who are born prematurely in her other clinic, some much more premature than 3 weeks, they monitor them really closely and are keen to spot any problems and deal with them quickly, try not to worry too much as he's clearly being followed up very carefully and well. I think those lights are called photo therapy (I'm her child protection clinic and not her neonatal side so pretty useless on all the proper terms), if it's this photo therapy stuff that I'm thinking of then I've seen it referred to ofen so I guess it must get some good results.

My daughter was kept in a week with jaundice, they had her under the lights for most of that time and she was fine - she's now approaching 15 and never had any health problems. Try not to worry - easier said than done, I know - but he's in the right place and they're taking good care of him. Far better he gets treatment than be sent home in the hope it'll sort itself out x

Had a txt from daughter 30 minutes ago, she says that the blood test number was up as expected and another one will be taken at 12 midnight to see how much increased, if not to much they will allowed home tomorrow, fingers and toes crossed!!!!

If the doctors mention "biliary atresia", put up another question here, with PANIC URGENT on it.
There are some centres which operate for biliary atresia with MUCH better results than others.
There must be a patient group somewhere concerned with this condition, so if the child has it, I'll try to help you further. Prefer Kings or Birmingham. However, it is extremely rare, thank goodness.

atlanta. what a very dramatic post, why on earth would anyone post on this site if a child/baby was very ill. ? if you read trt^s latest post the baby may get home tomorrow .

It did seem quite alamist to me too. Also, why would you post a thread when I would assume the doctors have slightly more insite than your average ABer. No disrespect intented but it sounded ridiculous to me.

Hi trt. Congratulations on the birth of your grandson x

My little boy was 4 weeks early, I mentioned to you on a previous thread about my liver condition being the reason he had to arrive early.

He didn't feed very well for the first day so his sugar levels went right down and he had some jaundice too. He was put on medication and had his poor little heels pricked more times than I can remember!!

Things started looking up the following day but they continued with the bloods. We were discharged after two days but had to return every couple of days to get him checked. At one point the hospital staff thought his jaundice had gotten worse and debated keeping him in. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as they initially thought so again, return in two days for more bloods. It didn't go on for too long, everything was and is fine.

Hope he's home for some cuddles tomorrow, trt x

Good News,

He is being allowed home this afternoon but has to go back tomorrow to check him over.

By the way, his name is Oscar : -)
