Does my Dad need a TV license?

He doesnt own a TV set but has recently got himself a laptop. My sister has bought him a few dvds. does he need to purchase a DVD license?

(live being shown at the same time (or close to the same time) as it is being broadcast on normal TV)

A TV license is essential if you are using any equipment that is able or equipped to receive a BBC signal I believe.

I'm sure I will be proved wrong though.

It's not Ratter.

I could get BBC live on my laptop but I don't and they'd have to get a court order to prove it. There's also no way to watch TV on an actually telly in my place even if I wanted to you. You just go on to the TV license site and you can fill in a little form to say you won't be obtaining a TV license as you don't need it. They haven't visited us yet.

your dad is ok to watch dvd's and he can watch any of the tv catch up's without a licence so long as they are not live

The confusion by many just underlines what a daft tax this is. And all the expense and fuss trying to catch dodgers. (Not to mention the persecution of those without a TV at their place.) My tax would be better spent on other things. If we wish to fund a national TV company then the government should just earmark a budget for it from general taxation.
