Why do Tory Governments always lose control of the streets?
I cannot condone last night's copy cat mayhem, but it was a sickening repeat of 1981 when the new Conservative Government also let us all down. Same ingredients, cuts to the police force, low morale, closing local services, zilch employment opportunities for the young, no new jobs but a benefits clampdown, cabinet ministers lording it on expensive holidays abroad while the country goes from one crisis to the next. And always the same when the Tories come to power, they couldn't run a pi55 up in a brewery.
This will go on all week now. Madness.

I agree the place isnt perfect but it has improved since those days. From what I have seen on the news an awful lot of these looters are just kids, too young to vote and no interest whatsoever in politics.
"The person who took the controls off the banks was Thatcher with her Big Bang"
Aah ... so it's all due to something that happened back in 1979 ??
Well, if Labour feel there is nothing they can do to change what happened over 30 years ago, they should stop standing for election. Labour's manifesto should just say ... "We Won't Make Any Difference, So Why Bother Voting For Us?"
In any case ... I think the biggest de-regulation came, ironically, under New Labour, when they were trying to climb into bed with the financial sector. Only under Labour were banks able to lend six times joint salary, on interest-only bases, to people who had no prospect of paying it back.

triggerhappy //Not accurate. None status lending has been going on for donkeys years. //
True but for 13 years Labour could have controlled it . Instead they went the other way and threw money around like confetti. It was during this time that people over 70 were given 50 year morgages, or open morgages with no time limit and interest only morgages for anybody . It's no good blaming the US, that is irrelevant, we are not tied into their economy. Labour had the power and could have managed our debts and failed to do so.
The result massive house inflation making it impossible for the first time buyers.

Funnily in such troubled times my husband said the same, tories the party of law and order, cutting benefits, staff, local government, police and fire services, shame its the ordinary person who has to face the mob and gets burnt out. Wish it would all stop, soon its going to be bodies in burnt out buildings.
gromit //What are you on about? We had to bail out British banks because they had spent all their money buying worthless US investments to make a quick buck. They did not find themselves bankrupt through lending to British borrowers.//
