Common Assault

I was recently accused of common assault by ex and the police called. There was pushing and shoving and punches and kicks by her with cuts to my face. Defending myself by pinning her down resulted in her having bruising. I was arrested and eventually the CPS decided not to proceed any further. I said at the time I did not want to counter claim against her as she started the fight and I was defending myself. However, it shows that the police always seem to dive in heavy handed and blame the male for the assault. However days after the incident I'm getting a little fed up of feeling bad for something I didn't do. Can I now counter claim her charge of assault?
Also - I have never been in trouble with the police and where does this incident leave my record?
Thanks,

A 'crime' report would have been recorded on their local system which will show you were arrested but no further action taken etc. This will remain on their system for obvious reasons.

You can contact the police if you want to make a counter complaint and your info will be assessed to see whether any crim offences are disclosed.
